Kings Cross Materials Library

I visited the Materials library in kings cross today to help me narrow down what sort of materials I want to focus on sourcing for my project. I already had an idea of the vibe for the fabrics through researching designers and from my mood board.

It was very helpful to see the fabrics in the flesh, and the wide scope of sustainable techniques that were used on each fabric. Here are some of the most applicable to my project that I saw.

-This fabric is shrunken polyester due to heat applied, and i really like the swirled gathered shapes its created and i think

it would be an interesting technique to apply to my project.

The texture Reminds me of the comme de garcons spring 2023 collection

-This is a cotton swatch, i think the way in which it is ethically sourced is very important, and despite

my work not necessarily having a sustainable lense id like to try and make my fabric as correctly sourced as possible.

-These are one of my favourite fabrics, they are organza and i think they look perfect for my project.

The sheerness of them mixed with the way light catches will hopefully be effective for my project.

I will definetely be using organza in my project, i just need to think about which part as i want my garment to be quite structured.

"This fabric is a high quality weave with metal. Variations in the metal threads lead to slight

differences in the structure. Because of the metal threads the fabric doesn't lie completely flat and therefore

the true beauty can only be revealed in use."

- This is another example of an organza type fabric, and despite being eye catching i dont like its slight

reflective qualities. Despite this the structure being mouldable is helpful so i would like to apply this

and find a way to make organza stiffened for structure.

- I enjoy this lace, depsite not being the biggest fan of lace for my project as i think its

slightly too old fashioned and would not lend itself to my modernised aspects, i do like

the slight non convention of the flowers on this piece. I also think paired with potential leather

or another stiff harsh fabric it could be effective so i will look into this.

-These feathers are interesting, its not a fabric i was thinking of using however my eye was drawn.

I like the way its bound at the top by a slightly sheer fabric.

- Despite this being packaging, the pannels remind me of the padding that went underneath womens clothes

and often lingerie, and i think is an interesting thing to look into for my fabric manipulations to increase texture.

Overall these fabrics are all ethical and sustainable, and in the future id love to apply this to my projects as i didnt realise

how wide of a scope there was to use.
